What to Expect

Before Your Surgery

  • Preoperative consultation with Dr. Radtke to review imaging and discuss the surgical plan.
  • Lab work, EKG, and primary care clearance may be required.
  • You will receive instructions on medications to adjust and when to stop eating/drinking.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after discharge.

The Day of Surgery

  • Arrive at St. Nicholas Hospital 1–2 hours before your procedure.
  • Check in, get prepped, and Dr. Radtke will see you to answer any final questions.
  • Most procedures take 2–4 hours. Dr. Radtke will update your family afterward.

Recovery & Going Home

  • Most patients go home the same day — no overnight stay required.
  • Pain is typically managed with over-the-counter medications. Most patients need zero to two days of narcotic pain medication.
  • 4–6 small incisions instead of one large one — less pain and faster healing.
  • Follow-up within 1–2 weeks to review incisions, pathology, and next steps.
  • Light activities in 1–2 weeks; full activity in 4–6 weeks.
