What This Means

Removes the entire kidney, surrounding fat, and sometimes the adrenal gland. This procedure is indicated when the tumor is too large, too central, or too complex for a partial nephrectomy. The robotic approach allows this to be performed through small incisions rather than a traditional large flank incision.

Surgical Priorities

Every robotic radical nephrectomy is planned around three core objectives.

1. Complete Cancer Removal

Thorough removal of the kidney and all surrounding tissue to ensure no cancer is left behind. The primary and most important goal of the operation.

2. Minimally Invasive Approach

Small incisions instead of a traditional large flank incision. This means less pain, less blood loss, and a shorter hospital stay compared to open surgery.

3. Rapid Recovery

The robotic approach facilitates faster healing. Most patients are up and walking the same day and return to normal activities within weeks, not months.
