Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy
A minimally invasive, office-based treatment for BPH that relieves symptoms while preserving sexual function.
Rezūm is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that causes bothersome urinary symptoms in millions of men. The procedure uses the natural energy stored in water vapor (steam) to shrink excess prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow.
During the procedure, a small device is inserted through the urethra and delivers brief, targeted injections of steam directly into the obstructing prostate tissue. The thermal energy causes the treated cells to die and be gradually absorbed by the body over the following weeks, opening up the urinary channel and improving symptoms.
Rezūm was FDA-cleared in 2015 and is supported by robust clinical data through five years of follow-up. It is recommended by the American Urological Association as a treatment option for BPH.
Why Consider Rezūm?
Rezūm fills the gap between daily medications and more invasive surgical options, offering meaningful relief with minimal disruption.
Preserves Sexual Function
Unlike TURP and many other BPH procedures, Rezūm has minimal impact on erections and ejaculation. This makes it an especially appealing option for men who want symptom relief without compromising sexual function.
Office-Based & Quick
The procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia (with optional oral sedation) and takes approximately 5–10 minutes. No general anesthesia, no operating room, and no hospital stay.
Durable Results
Clinical studies show that 95.6% of Rezūm patients do not require any additional surgical intervention at five years. Symptom improvement is typically noticeable within two to four weeks and continues to improve over three months.
Get Off Daily Medication
Many men are able to discontinue their BPH medications after Rezūm, avoiding the ongoing cost, inconvenience, and side effects of daily pills like tamsulosin or finasteride.
Rezūm is best suited for men with small to medium-sized prostates (approximately 30–80 grams) who have bothersome urinary symptoms from BPH. You may be a good candidate if:
- BPH medications are not providing adequate relief or you want to stop taking them
- You are experiencing side effects from BPH medications (dizziness, sexual dysfunction, fatigue)
- You prefer a less invasive alternative to TURP or HoLEP
- Preserving sexual function is a priority
- You want a procedure that can be done in the office rather than an operating room
Rezūm can also treat an enlarged median lobe, which not all minimally invasive BPH therapies can address. Dr. Radtke will evaluate your prostate size, anatomy, and symptom severity to determine if Rezūm is the right fit — or whether another procedure such as HoLEP or robotic simple prostatectomy would provide a better outcome.
What to Expect
From your first visit through full recovery, here is the typical Rezūm timeline.
Evaluation
Dr. Radtke will review your symptoms (IPSS score), perform a prostate exam, check a PSA, and often perform a cystoscopy to assess prostate size and anatomy. Together you will determine if Rezūm is the best option.
5–10 Minute Office Procedure
Performed under local anesthesia in the office. The steam injections take only a few seconds each. Most patients describe mild, brief discomfort. A temporary catheter is placed afterward to allow the prostate to heal.
Catheter Removal
The catheter is typically removed within three to seven days. Some urinary urgency, frequency, and mild discomfort are normal during this period as the treated tissue begins to break down.
Symptoms Begin to Improve
Most men begin to notice improved urine flow and fewer symptoms within two to four weeks as the treated prostate tissue is gradually absorbed by the body.
Full Benefit Realized
Maximum symptom improvement is typically achieved by three months. Follow-up with Dr. Radtke confirms your progress and addresses any remaining questions.
